International Cello Institute (ICI) is an intensive program for serious young cellists between the ages of 12 to 24 who would thrive in an inspiring, intense, and richly supportive learning environment.
ICI 2019 will be held on the gorgeous campus of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, located just 40 miles south of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. While at ICI, students stay in dorms and have access to practice rooms, rehearsal rooms, two concert halls, and an award-winning cafeteria. Students are provided with plenty of practice time and the opportunity to immerse themselves in the study and development of their individual skills in private lessons, chamber music workshops and masterclasses. In order to give our students a unique experience each summer, our outstanding faculty features teachers from around the world and changes every year.
Students need to come prepared with prepared repertoire. Polished for masterclasses and recitals, and in process for lessons and coachings. This summer we are requiring students to come prepared with:
- a short concert or encore piece
- at least one movement of a standard Cello & Piano sonata
- at least one movement of a Cello Concerto
We also encourage students to bring other pieces, at least one movement of an unaccompanied Bach Cello Suite or anything else you or your teacher might want you to work on over the summer.
New this summer, is a focus on collaboration and the learning of sonatas. Those students who wish to focus on sonata playing will receive coachings and masterclasses by both pianists and cellists.
Guest concerts, lectures and performances are scheduled regularly during the three-week institute. Our guest artist recital series, CELLOici, runs concurrently with the institute. These ticketed concerts take place in Minneapolis where students travel via bus and attend free of charge with preferred seating. Guest artists this year are Colin Carr and Julie Albers, and Brant Taylor.
The International Cello Institute invites students from all countries to join in this experience, and we welcome students of any race, gender, and national or ethnic origin.
