American cellist Meta Weiss (pronounced MAY-ta) made her international debut at the age of seven in Utrecht, Holland, and has established herself as one of the leading cellists of her generation. Hailed as “magnetic” (ArtsJournal) and “luminous” (Sydney Arts Guide) on stage, her performances have taken her to venues throughout the US and internationally, including Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Boston Symphony Hall, The Kimmel Center, Royal Albert Hall, The Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Recital Centre, Auckland Town Hall, and Teatro Britanico (Peru). She has performed as soloist with orchestras worldwide, including Camerata Chamber Orchestra (Australia), Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira (Rio de Janeiro), Orquestra Sinfonica do Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro (Brasilia), and the Pennsylvania Sinfonia. Weiss has also served as Guest Principal Cello with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and Guest Associate Principal Cello with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
She has garnered top prizes in numerous competitions, including the Irving M. Klein International String Competition, Washington International Competition, Frances Walton Competition, Carmel Music Society Competition, National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Competition, Schadt Cello Competition, Yamaha Young Performing Artist Award, and the TexASTA Solo Competition. As a member of the cello-rock group Break of Reality, she was selected by the US Department of State as a “musical ambassador” for the American Music Abroad Program. With Break of Reality, she has toured across America, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, and Brazil.
She is regularly featured as artist-faculty at festivals around the world such as Icicle Creek Chamber Music Institute, Olympic Music Festival, Denver Chamber Music Festival, Manchester Music Festival, Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival, Melbourne Cello Festival, Port Fairy Spring Music Festival, and Music in the Hunter. She is the Artistic Director and co-founder of the Boulder Cello Festival.
